4_3 ORIGAMI FOLDING

September 22, 2009

This definition looks a little bit complicated, but it would be simple and easy once you understand the behind logic.

First, I’d like to intrce the geometric logic of this Origami Surface I found.

So, building process would be like this below.

    Hi, this looks great.
Was there any chance you could post the definition file? It would be much appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Philip

    Hi Philip,
Thanks for interest, but I can’t upload ghx file on this blog. I think you could see the image of definition and follow it. You can ‘save image as..’ on the definition image.(resolution is pretty high, so you can see all definition contents.)

    Hi Hyoung-gul,
Thanks for the reply. Your definitions are definitely well presented and annotated, but I think offering the definition file may be of use when the definitions are particularly laborious to reconstruct, or to assist those who are still quite new to the GH workflow.
If technical constraints were preventing you from uploading the files, I’d suggest using an uploading service such as rapidshare.com. Alternatively, Ill’d also be more than willing to host any files you need.

Thanks for suggestion. I considered it but personally I am worrying about just ‘copy’ and ‘paste’ when people can download the ghx file. I think it’s not a good way to learn it, even reconstruct it. It might make just a replication of definition. If someone really want to make it, I am sure at least he will spend some efforts to figure out by himself. I know my site is not enough to explain the whole workflow now, so I am preparing more detailed version (eventually publication) in the future. Thanks for your comments.

    Great stuff!
Nice code and nice forms generated. It reminds me the Yokohama project by FOA (I love that building!).
The explanations are clear. I’m trying to achieve a result like your for a project of a factory that I’m developing in these months.

Bye and thank you for share your works!

    Hyoung-Gul,

I appreciate your wish to keep the GHX file from being copied…but I’ve run into some issues with the surface creation. What integer are you using for the shift list command to create the second set of origami surfaces? I keep getting a surface on top of an existing surface…

Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Ben, thanks for your interest. I updated the draft guide book (.pdf) of this definition. It would be a little different because now I used the new version. Please refer to that file.

    Thanks.

    Dear Hyoung-Gul,

I deeply appreciate your work and the input on this topic, you have no idea how much we here in the GH world value what your doing, As i am new to GH, it’s really a challenge for me and an inspiration, i have managed to follow through on the instructions u gave but i must say i am lost at creating the folded surfaces from points, i am just not getting it after numerous attempts. i seem to be having the same problem as Ben. Please help your all i got!

    Major Thanks!

Christopher, Thanks for your comments. I think it should work if you follow the steps in pdf. instruction I uploaded even though it has a small mistake. And I fixed and updated it now (30. ‘Flatten’ in all ‘point’ before creating 4-point surface, 34.the order of inputs is fixed). However, I am sure all other stuffs are right, I checked it. Thank you.

    Hi Hyoung-gul,

I did. Is it right, you get only different triangles. I am working on a ghx to fold rhombuses. Every rhombus is the same. I try to go the deductive way, starting with the small piece and adding the whole.
    Did you do this?
I would like to post you on my blog wordpress.attitudegeometries.com. Would this be ok for you?

    Hey Hyoung-gul Kook,

I agree, that You’re giving a origami tutorial, but not a .ghx file. Nice way to learn everything!
Right now I am learning GH. I have found, that this origami surface is a little bit the same like my idea in my semester project. So I am trying to learn from your tutorial. Everything semms very nice/easy/clear, but in the beginning my connection from “Wires” to “Item” is in double line. And I can’t fix it.
Maybe for you it’s very easy, but I can’t understand what’s wrong. Maybe you could help me?
I am waiting for Your answer.

    Kind regards,
    Luk-

Thanks for the detailed great tutorial. Hopefully in the future you can upload the .ghx as a .txt file onto wordpress as a guide as well.

    Hi Hyoung-gul Kook,

Thanks for the tutorials! They’re really useful and clear, but I have some issues with creating the surfaces from the points. I also tried the Panalized folding, the Horizontal folding and the Tessellated folding tutorials. With all I have the same issue.
Could you please look at my panalized and origami folding files?

    Regards,
    Simone
