4_5 TESSELLATED FOLDING

March 22, 2010

Tessellated Folding is a basic geometry for all origami folding. It is almost similar with Truss Connection logic.  In terms of geometric logic, only difference in folded plates from truss tessellation is connecting with” surface” instead of “lines”.

This geometry below was inspired by Toyo Ito’s Dune Pavilion, but more developed through surface folding geometry. By shifting the group of points, it could generate different degree of folding which defines the flow of space tectonically.

    Dear Hyoung-gu,

Would you please contact me regarding the tessellated folding tutorial? I have tried several times with no luck along with many of my friends. I am anxious to know where I made a mistake.

    kind regards,

    great site!
There seems to be a problem with the DIST output – it creates numerous circles (with varying radii) for each point, as opposed to one circle on each point…hmmm.

oops… found the flatten option on the DIST inputs…. still learning obviously. Thanks again for the great work.

    HiHyoung

First of all, thank you for providing this site, great effort.

I’ve been working on your tesselated folding tutorial, and its been going great. My only issue is the triangulated surfaces seems to jump every second ‘ring’. Maybe a bit difficult to explain, but I hope you get the idea?

It seems you mean it looks like “Cull” pattern; true/false array… or “Shift”… The definition is all about sort of the different data organization, so if you look at closely again with “Panel”, you may solve it. If you send me the file, I can help you more details. Thanks for interest.

    hello Hyoung-gul Kook,

I too am having trouble with this tutorial. Of course I am am a beginner, so I am am missing some of the nuance that it takes to make this work properly. But however, going step by step, something seems to be missing in the instructions.

In the step describing the surfacing of the tessellation, it simply is not comming together, I only get a single strip of triangles running from end to end. Any thoughts? Can I send you my file?

Thanks for any response in advance.

I am sure the tutorial works fine. A number of people have used this blog and tutorial and they had no problems. And I updated many times to modified it whenever it had a small problem. Please send me your file, I’ll look at it. Thanks.

i found what might be wrong (not wrong, but just a small detail).

In the shift component that says to jump the points from the previous circle, u have to unwrap the data. other wise , it will jump the data, excluding the previous. u can change it in the third input of the Shift component.

Hi Hyoung-gul Kook, I have been trying to go over my gh def. to figure out the problem I encountered. For some reason, I only get a bunches of circle that only radiate from the 2 curves when they are parallel with x-axis. Would you mind look at my gh def. n point out what I have done wrong? I’m using the latest gh version.
