PROJECT : La Fabrique Sonore

This project is design of pavilion functioning as “loud speaker”, which is installed at ‘Pommery’ champagne factory cave in France. (exhibition 2011.09~2012.03) The acoustic folded surface and shape of cone amplify the sound of excitement from champagne bubble in the cave. All process and details, analysis have been perfectly developed by using GH. The project was collaborated with two great artists Ali Monemi and Robin Meier.

4_6 PANELIZED FOLDING

Folding and Paneling are always useful design items for surfacing in architecture. Through the simple logic with different combinations of basic geometry, a number of geometric options which have different visual and acoustic effects can be generated. It also comes with idea of modulations and system for actual construction. This definition and geometry was specially developed for the actual project ‘La Fabrique Sonore’. 1_4 GRADIENT PIXELIZATION

This has been simply developed to generate gradient pixelization with limited number of types. It is transferring brightness values to probabilities of random selection. This would be useful practically to create a tiling from gradient image with limited or controlled number of tiles like façade of soccer city worldcup stadium. (GH version : Build 0.8.0009)

7_2 MINIMAL SURFACE PANELING

The Minimal Surface Module can be applied to Paneling of any Rhino Surface with flexible geometry. It is using ‘date tree’ for ’Shift’ to get a mirror effect and using Minimal Surface module like a X-ref block. Please see the tutorial link below. (GH version : Build 0.8.0004)

7_1 MINIMAL SURFACE MODULE

This is GH construction for one of well-known minimal surfaces. It is using ‘Evaluate Length’ to be flexible for any scale and using ‘Arc’ or ‘Bi-Arc’ to be a module for continuous minimal surface. STUDY : HEXAGONAL WEAVING

This is an experiment about a kind of fabric paneling which is applicable to any rhino surface. And it is also possible to differentiate the overlap gap by using “attractors” (see Density Components). Basically, it started from setting up 3-dimensional woven frame with hexagonal modules. And each hexagonal module is shaped by using bezier curves (after offset to inside) between 3-dimensional points. The whole definition is pretty complicated, but most of them are already explained on my previous tutorials; Hexagonal Connection, Hexagonal Opening, Bezier Connection…

6_5 3D HEXAGONAL FRAME

This study started from the questions about a new 3-dimensional frame system using hexagonal modules. Rather than space frame generated from a surface, it is a geometric experiment about space frame generated from one curve. It could be potentially applied to a structural frame, or space cells and tessellation… Absolutely, the result has all possible parameters which is developable without limitation.

Other parametric potentials are explored.

PROJECT : ORIGAMI HUT

This is one of my small projects which is using various ‘Components’ on this blog; Spiral, Diagonal Connection, Origami Folding… It is a good example using GH for everything in design process including fabrication assembly details and unfolded drawings. Also it’s a kind of test about different ways of using origami geometry which I studied before. The definition is pretty well organized, but too complicated to be shown here. It is just using various combination of other ‘Components’ on this blog.

2_3 TERRAIN SURFACE MAKER

In many times, we need to build terrain surface in architecture. There are other applications or plug-in to build a terrain. But this component could be another option to build a terrain surface pretty quickly by using grasshopper. It’s a simple and easy tip to convert ‘contour’ curves to ‘uv’ curves.

4_5 TESSELLATED FOLDING

Tessellated Folding is a basic geometry for all origami folding. It is almost similar with Truss Connection logic. In terms of geometric logic, only difference in folded plates from truss tessellation is connecting with” surface” instead of “lines”.

This geometry below was inspired by Toyo Ito’s Dune Pavilion, but more developed through surface folding geometry. By shifting the group of points, it could generate different degree of folding which defines the flow of space tectonically.
